From Bruce:
April 14:
DEAN JACKSON (1980-2006)
It is still with a sense of disbelief that I write this.
With my great friend Joe Reid (Des), I host a weekly talk back radio show on
station called RadioLive(www.radiolive.co.nz), called “The Dawn
Patrol, with Des & Les“ (I’m the Les component).
As part of our show we put out the call for anyone to phone us up and
sing a song, play an instrument tell a poem etc. etc., in what we call
‘the chance of lifetime‘, it is very light hearted and we never cut anyone
short even if they possess zero talent. The beauty is that we unearth some
wonderfully talented listeners. I think it was on our first show about 9 months
ago we have had a young guy called Dean Jackson, 26 yrs old, phone the show
and sing the national anthem in Maori and English. Immediately we told Dean
we wanted him to be calling every week and singing us songs. His voice was
stunning and he was such a positive person. RadioLive is broadcast from
Auckland and Dean was living in Christchurch, New Zealand, however over the
ensuing months he twice travelled to Auckland and sat with Des and Les in
the studio for the duration of our 6 hour show, singing songs, talking to
other callers etc. Even when Dean was not with us in the studio, people
would phone in each week requesting that Dean call and sing a song for them.
He became an integral part of the Des and Les “radio family”.
Dean, aside from being a wonderful human being, was incredibly inspiring.
Born totally blind, and subject to the brutality of epilepsy, he had got
himself to the stage where he had worked for Microsoft, and moved on into
other areas of IT, in particular IT that aided the sight impaired. Besides
his dedication to his faith as a Christian, Dean was also a ham radio
operator and a few months ago started his own online radio station,
check it out at http://www.zl1jj.com/djradio/
.. The dude was a cool guy and so talented. Last week on our show he called
and said he would not be able to sing as he had woken up that morning and
realised he had suffered a minor seizure in his sleep, as he had bitten his
tongue. This was not the first time Deans epilepsy had prevented him from
taking part in The Dawn Patrol.
At the age of 26, Dean Jackson had already achieved a state of being able to
live his life to the fullest, irrespective of the huge hurdles that had been
put in front of him from the word go. Thus my sense of disbelief, that this
wonderful human being, Dean Jackson, will no longer heed my high pitched
call for listeners to phone us and take part in “chaaaaaaaance of a
lifetiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime“. Dean Jackson passed away during a seizure on
April 11th 2006.
For one without sight he saw so much more than many of us who are sighted
will ever see, he saw into people hearts and he touched peoples hearts.
Deans life is being shared and celebrated online at
http://jmosen.livejournal.com/188508.html
. Take a look if you wish, Dean would smile, to know that you cared.
Dean in the Studio

Bruce:"Dean Jackson, when he spent a night with us on our radio show.
He is singing while reading the lyrics off his Braille note.
Dean would download lyrics off the computer onto this machine."
