June 2, 2004

"Gidday You Lot,

(by “you lot” I mean anyone who turns up at this here site. By being here it means you have a commonality with anyone else who has ever visited this site, so welcome to the “you lot” whanau (in Maori, wahanu can mean an extended family).

Sorry I was raving, Gidday.

I get conscious of letting too much time pass between spells of updating my input to this site. Anyway, here is the 4:36pm bulletin for the 2nd June in the year 2004.

I sometimes reflect on the fact that as a teenager, a number of times, I would try to project to my future and imagine being alive in the year 2000. I would work out what my age would be and find it almost inconceivable.
Well, bloody hell, here it is 2004, and nearly halfway through at that. 2000 is ancient history.
Back to the 4:36pm bulletin (it’s actually now 4:41pm!!! How time flies)
At present my time is taken up wondering how the hell I am going to make the documentary I am creating about Operation Read. If any of you are visiting this site as a repeat experience and have not read the report I wrote for TORN about Operation Read , please do so when you have time. And if this is your first visit here, please have a read at some point. There’s a copy on this site and there’s a copy in the news archives of TORN on the 15th or 16th of April.

I am beginning to envisage a couple of threads for creating a context and timeframe of the incredible journey of Operation Read, which was started by Winnie Jackson and Supervisor Don Knabe from LA County. The reality of making a doco is exciting, scary and my own current personal Mount Everest. I am determined to climb to the top, who knows what the view will be once I get there but I am enjoying at least making the attempt.
Did I mention anything about the fact that I like to rave sometimes!!! I will try to keep you posted as the gestation of the doco progresses.

Work wise it is very strange here in NZ. We have two of the world's biggest film projects for the near future happening ("King Kong" and "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe", both in pre-production) but the reality for the vast majority of local actors is that there is not really that much on offer there. The local scene is almost dry, apart from a couple of projects that are also in pre-production. What this all means also is that basically if you get a gig on any one of these jobs you will be unavailable for the others.
I went along the other night to see a digital feature I acted in last year, called “1 Night”. It was produced with no budget, and my role, which is one half of one of three parallel storylines, took 5 hours to shoot one night last year. Initially there were 6 storylines but, Amabir the director, edited it to follow just three of these. (Phew!!! I made the cut!)
Here in the 'Land of the long white cloud', I marvel at what Peter, Fran, Richard Taylor ect. in the Wingnut/Weta consortium are achieving, I also have a fascination and deep respect for what Andrew Adamason has and is doing ('Shrek', 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe'). However I am also buoyed by what some of the totally independent film makers are doing. Amabir and his cohorts at Rice Digital, a guy called Leigh Hart who has a comedy series and company called Moon Television, and a number of others are deciding, much like Peter did many years ago, to just get out there and make their own ideas happen. Digital technology is allowing people to try ideas without the budgets that have been required in past. This is a double edged sword of course, (I like getting paid when I act, as this is how I pay the bills for me and my family!).

Recently I did another loop group session for 'Power Rangers', which is going into it’s 3rd. season of production here in NZ.
I have been thinking of putting 4-5 (of the 20 or so) short films I have acted in over the years on a DVD, to sell online at this site. I want the people who created each film (usually writer/directors on short films) to be able to make some money from each sale and I would hopefully earn a couple of bucks as well. If any of “you lot” would be interested in purchasing such a DVD please let me know in the guest book of this site and if there is interest I will see what I can do to make it happen.

A couple of weeks back I did an interview with Dan from the official LOTR fan magazine, so hopefully that cuts together ok. It will be out in one of the next issues.

I do sometimes wonder if I am repeating myself too much in interviews or when I talk to fans at conventions, so hopefully this interview will have some fresh stuff. I enjoyed the experience anyway. And isn’t that one of the more lucid pieces of wisdom there is, 'the journey is the destination'.

I’m outta here for now, ongoing thanks to all of you who take the time to be here. Get out there and help the world discover peace and love. (sound like a bloody hippie!!!)
